– Researchers have found that tart cherry juice may help ease muscle pain associated with intense exercise. Here’s the gist of the science, provided to me by the Cherry Marketing Institute, pointing to tart cherry juice as a natural performance-enhancer (sources below): So does tart cherry juice really help with recovery? More importantly for ultrarunners, can you really feel the difference the anti-inflammatory properties make in how sore you feel not just after a long run, but during? He doesn’t use ibuprofen, and of tart cherry juice (he’s an ambassador for one brand), he says: “All-natural tart cherry juice allows me to recover from tough races sooner, without taking needless chemicals that do more harm than good.” And Jurek is certainly not alone: as we’re all becoming more aware of what we put in our bodies, more and more athletes are turning to natural performance boosters like tart cherry juice. Still though, true to my granola-crunching hypochondriac roots, I don’t like risking even that.Īpparently, neither does vegan ultrarunning hero Scott Jurek. But for targeted use, during a race now and then, I get it. Of course, masking the pain isn’t something you want to do as part of your normal training routine - that pain is there for a reason it’s your body telling you to stop. Any ultrarunner will tell you the relief from Vitamin I is quick and very noticeable. And because pain - usually much more than fatigue - is such a limiting factor in an ultra, there’s a distinct advantage to popping lots of ibuprofen to mask the pain during the race (assuming it doesn’t land you in the hospital). For the next 45 minutes, I felt new life. (See my Vermont 50 recap, where ibuprofen played a big role in my finishing the race.)ĭuring my 100, I took a single ibuprofen tablet just as the sun was beginning to come up at mile 87, when my feet were screaming for mercy. And before I knew enough to be scared of it, I did too. Lots of ultrarunners rely on ibuprofen - Vitamin I, as it’s jokingly called, and somehow that joke becomes funny around mile 40 - to get them through the race. Rest assured that the opinions (and results of my 7-day challenge) are entirely mine. Sponsored posts are new territory for me, so we’ll see how it goes and what you think. #Tart cherry juice benefits seriesNote: This post is the first in a sponsored, 3-part series about a 7-Day Tart Cherry Juice Challenge I’ll be doing. Which makes them extremely well-suited for ultrarunning, where pain more than anything else eventually becomes the limiting factor … if they deliver. There’s a decent amount of science to say so, and the fact that it’s stuck around a while - I think I first heard of it in 2010 - certainly bodes well.īut what’s most intriguing to me about tart cherries is that they’re not just for recovery: they also have anti-inflammatory properties and have been demonstrated to reduce muscle pain during an event. Speed of recovery is hard to measure, subjectively, and even when the objective evidence is there, the miracle product du jour isn’t often something most of us would want to put in our bodies.īut tart cherry juice may just be an exception: (a) it’s natural and (b) it seems like it might actually promote recovery. And mostly, as runners, we’ve learned to ignore them. If you’re a runner, you know there’s no shortage of new supplements and other products that claim to promote faster recovery for us.

In our family, I think we’re going to move beyond invisible trophies and into actual storytelling about bad behavior. While you may not agree with the sea monsters, waiting until both parent and child are calm to respond helps kids learn emotional regulation in a safe, calm manner. Like my invisible trophies, they teach kids a story that enforces good behavior. But it keeps the kids in line, and teaches them to behave according to Inuit cultural norms, says NPR. “We were so scared,” giggles one Inuit girl. Want them to keep their hat on? The northern lights will snatch their heads off. It keeps them safe from very real danger. Tell them a sea monster lives there who will stick them in its pouch and spirit them away to another family. Want to keep your kid away from the ocean? Don’t scold. It’s about how they learn about their world and about their experiences.”īut this storytelling goes even beyond play-acting, into storytelling that might horrify some Western parents. But she says kids learn to emotionally regulate this way - they practice controlling their anger at the situation, and they learn the proper response to the behavior. That sounds like something out of Brad Pitt’s Fight Club: “I want you to hit me as hard as you can!” not a typical mother-child interaction. And the parents will respond by saying things like, “Don’t you like me?” or “Ow that hurts!” or “Are you a baby?” The Harvard graduate student says that she once saw a mother hand a pebble to a child. The kid is “tempted to misbehave,” according to NPR. They have to be in the right frame of mind for the lesson to work. When children misbehave, everyone waits until the children have calmed down - really calmed down - from the situation. Instead, they use storytelling to modify behavior. That’s a different approach than the yelling, spanking, time-out, say-you’re-sorry Western culture we are immersed in. Moreover, “You are teaching them to be angry,” clinical psychologist and author Laura Markham said to NPR. Yelling at a kid is demeaning: it means you’re becoming the child and throwing the tantrum yourself. When little kids do something anti-social, “They’re upset about something, and you have to figure out what it is.” “It will just make your own heart rate go up,” says one woman. Inuit elders who spoke with NPR laughed at the idea of yelling at or scolding a small child. In his book Inuit Youth: Growth and Change in the American Arctic, Richard Guy Condon says that he heard of only one substantiated case of physical punishment in three years of fieldwork, and that “a child who misbehaves is not seen as a ‘bad child,’ who intentionally engages in culpable acts, but as a child who ‘really can’t listen.’” As Learn Alberta says, “Slapping and scolding were not regarded as acceptable forms of child control.” Jean Briggs, a Harvard grad student who lived with the Inuit for 17 months in the 1970s, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, according to NPR, that no one ever showed anger towards her, “though they were angry with me an awful lot.”įirst, the Inuit are among the gentlest parenting cultures in the world. Showing any sign of anger is seen as babyish, weak, foolish. In the Inuit culture, “ Control of anger, or hostile emotion of any kind, is an imperative … Accidents, inept behavior, and failures result only in murmurs or gentle laughter-people impose strong self-control on their emotions,” says Inuit of Utkuhikhalik and Qipisa Communities. The Inuit according to Inuulitsivik, the Canadian Inuit site, are “the aboriginal inhabitants of the North American Arctic” and though spread throughout the Arctic Circle, number about 40,000 in Canada and 16,500 in the US. RELATED: Tips And Tactics For Effectively Disciplining Your Toddler #Eskimo iunit kid how toAnd that’s perhaps why they use stories to teach their children: teach them not only discipline in general, but also how to control their anger. Psychologist Deena Weisberg at Villanova University told NPR, “Stories, by their nature, can have lots of things in them that are much more interesting in a way that bare statements don’t.” The Inuit have known this. It’s a form of storytelling, in a way, a kind of play-modeling that reinforces good behavior. They will walk to the moon and back for these invisible trophies - including my nine-year-old. Only mom and dad have this secret power, so they can’t go manufacturing these treasures on their own. I may talk about its particular attractiveness or beauty or what’s written in gold on it. From a friend, I learned about the idea of giving my kids “invisible trophies.” If they do something particularly good or wonderful or difficult, I give them an invisible trophy.
Then in Star Trek TNG and beyond, it's mentioned as a plot point several times that warp 10 is the absolute "speed limit" of the universe, like the speed of light is to us now. And there were a few other instances of high warp factors. In the episode with the Nomad probe, it improved the efficiency of the engines so that the Enterprise could travel at warp 11. In the original series, there were ships known to travel at warp 10 or even faster. Warp factors have consistently gone through a re-proportioning process throughout the Star Trek universe. Okay I'm answering this off the seat of my pants because I don't have the time to do research, but here's my explanation: The page when goes on to basically theorize the in-universe reasons, which are essentially what I posted above. Maybe Warp 15 will be the ultimate speed limit, and Warp 13 in that scale will be the equivalent of warp 9.95 or something like that." I don't think that ended up in the final draft teleplay, but the idea there was that if you've got ships that can routinely travel at speeds in excess of Warp 9, then maybe it makes sense to recalibrate your speed scale so that Warp 10 is no longer infinite velocity. Basically, the idea there was that they recalibrated the warp scale. In the October 1995 issue of the Omni magazine, science advisor Andre Bormanis states: "I raised that question in a TECH note. There is no official formula to calculate the speed corresponding to the revised warp factors. So these are the maximum warp speeds available in the TNG era:Īnd since technology was only getting better, these maximum warp speeds would have steadily gotten more absurd, since Warp 10 ("Infinite Speed") isn't actually possible under that scale ( Threshold excluded).Īnother recalibration was inevitable, with All Good Things hinting that they returned to a TOS-style scale that didn't have an upper limit.Įx Astris Scientia includes some additional information: The curve from 9-10 has no definite equation because it was based on a hand-drawn curve. Thanks to a related question, this image comes from Michael Okuda, art supervisor for TNG and beyond. Warp 9-10 spanned the remainder of all warp speeds because there were apparently no further spikes of that sort: The TNG curve was based on supposed in-universe physics, where the thresholds for Warp 1-9 were based on some sort of transition that involved extra power usage. With Warps 9-10 scaling up exponentially, asymptote at 10. In the TNG era (TNG+DS9+VOY), the recalibration had two parts - for warp factors below 9, this was the equation: TOS-era (TOS+ENT), this was the official calculation for warp factor: In-universe, at some point between the two settings, the warp scale was recalibrated, giving different speeds for each warp factor. During the TOS era, there wasn't a limit. This is a reference to the different scale used in TOS compared to TNG. It is, however, possible that the warp scale was recalibrated in this future. This would appear to contradict "Threshold", where it is stated that Warp 10 is the theoretical limit. In addition, ships in the future timeline are able to go above Warp 13. It is clear that there is no more warp 5 limit in the future. On the Memory Alpha page for All Good Things, this is mentioned - bolding mine: Mee Sum Pastry, 4343 University Way NE ĭing Tea, 4725 University Way NE Sharetea, 4730 University Way NE, Suite 109-110 īoba Smoothies, 1409 NE 45th St. (The standout here is Timeless Tea because of its realistic dog cakes and easy parking.)īoba Up, 4141 University Way NE #103 In a one-mileish radius you can find bubble tea at the Oh Bear Cafe, Timeless Tea, Sharetea, Boba Smoothies, Mee Sum Pastry, Ding Tea and many others. Young Tea’s hibiscus juice is caffeine-free, and the shop often offers contests and deals on social media. You can also wander over to Young Tea, one of the city’s most noteworthy boba places. We tried the flavor Life Is Peachy on our most recent visit.Īt the Uwajimaya supermarket in the International District, you can grab bubble tea from Jardin Tea in the food court after you finish shopping. It is attached to a Just Poke shop, which is convenient if you need lunch, and the grueling walk back up the hill to the Troll is worth this refreshing stop. Find parking near the Fremont Troll and walk about 10 minutes down the hill to where there’s a piece of the Berlin Wall DIY Tea Lab is right nearby. If I’m ever stumped about what to order, I just ask what the most popular drink is and that’s the one I get.ĭIY Tea Lab on North 34th Street is perfect if you’re exploring the city or have out-of-town guests in tow. (Who knew ordering a boba could be a math lesson too?) When my kids were younger, I would ask for drinks that were not caffeinated – usually the milks, various flavors of fruit slushes or smoothies on the menu. Most shops follow the same formula for ordering bubble tea: You pick a drink, choose a size, customize your ice preference and state your sweetness level in percentage form. The three of us recently went on a quest to visit and try as many bubble tea shops as we could to find some gems. They often order milk tea with regular ice, 70% sweet with boba and lychee jelly, but can also be swayed to pick drinks that are seasonal or just really photogenic. (And it was also fairly popular in Vancouver, B.C., where I grew up.) Now my twin 13-year-old boys and I bond over our bubble tea adventures. Bubble tea and boba are both names for a usually tea-based drink with tapioca pearls that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. Not so long ago, it was a whole lot harder to find bubble tea in Seattle, so it’s refreshing to see that boba shops are popping up seemingly everywhere.

Conservatives tended see wealth distribution as less zero-sum - “wealth can grow so there’s enough for everyone” - while liberals tended to see wealth as more zero-sum - “people can only get rich at the expense of others,” according to the paper. The authors used World Values Survey responses from 2010 to 2014 from 2,128 Americans on their political ideology and tendency to think of economic issues as zero-sum. residents the authors recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) an online labor market researchers commonly use to recruit study participants. Each of the remaining surveys had roughly 200 to 300 U.S. The largest group participated in the World Values Survey, a nationally representative survey conducted semiyearly around the world by an international consortium of social scientists. The new paper looks at results from six surveys with a total of more than 3,200 participants. “White respondents were more likely to see decreases in bias against Blacks as related to increases in bias against Whites - consistent with a zero-sum view of racism among Whites - whereas Blacks were less likely to see the two as linked.” The more things change … A May 2011 paper in Perspectives on Psychological Science surveyed a nationally representative sample of 417 Americans, roughly equal numbers white and black, and found: Yet research suggests white people sometimes see racism as zero-sum. Racism, for example, can’t be quantified like dollars and cents. In real life, zero-sum thinking is not so much about an equal and opposite reaction, where Maya’s gain is perfectly balanced by Joe’s loss. “It’s this seesaw view of the world where we can’t all be winning,” says Columbia Business School assistant professor Shai Davidai, who wrote the paper with Martino Ongis of the New School for Social Research. Add Maya’s win with Joe’s loss, and the sum is zero. All inĪ zero-sum situation happens when one party gains and another party experiences a commensurate loss. “We argue that both liberals and conservatives view life as zero-sum when it benefits them to do so,” the authors write. In the U.S., national elected leaders at opposite ends of the political spectrum have been known to push zero-sum narratives. Liberals, on the other hand, think zero-sum when it comes to economic inequality, like overall wealth being concentrated in fewer hands. New research in Science Advances breaks down the policy issues on which political conservatives and liberals think in zero-sum terms - a black-and-white view of the world where there are only winners and losers.Ĭonservatives think zero-sum when it comes to policies that touch on social change, like immigration reform, according to the paper, “The politics of zero-sum thinking: The relationship between political ideology and the belief that life is a zero-sum game.” #MEDIAINFO STREAMORDER FOR FREE#'1.701 MiB ' proportion_of_this_stream: Submit malware for free analysis with Falcon Sandbox and Hybrid Analysis technology.
